Using the Library

Library Cards

Any resident of Lewiston is eligible for a free library card. Applicants must present identification, and proof of residence. A library card is required to borrow library items, and to use the library’s computers.

Temporary cards, and computer guest passes may be issued for those visiting the area. Identification is required.

A $1 fee is charged for a replacement card; no fee is charged to replace a card that is worn out due to extended use.

Please notify the library if your card is lost or stolen, or if your name or address changes.

Checking Out

Please present your own library card to check out material. You are responsible for all materials checked out on your card.

  • Audiobooks are loaned for 14 days
  • Magazines and periodicals are loaned for 14 days
  • DVDs and videos are loaned for 7 days
  • Books and most other materials are loaned for 28 days
  • Books, Audiobooks, and Magazines have no limit for the number of items you can have checked out at one time.
  • DVDs are limited to 6 items checked out at one time.
  • Reference and genealogy materials, newspapers, and some magazines are designated for use in the library and may not be checked out
  • Interlibrary loan material will be circulated for the period indicated by the owning library

Renewals

You may renew materials by bringing your library card or items to the library or by phone. To request a renewal by phone, call 208.798.2525; please have your library card ready. To extend your renewal date online you need to do it by the due date; the system does not accept renewals on overdue items.

Holds
If the material you need is already checked out or at another location, the item can be placed on Hold.  You may place a hold online using the VALNet library catalog, or phone the library and a staff member will be happy to place the hold for you.

Once your hold is available, you will be notified.  If your email address is in the system, an email will be sent. Otherwise, library staff will call to advise your hold is available for pick-up.

You are able to check the status of your hold request, cancel your request, or check the general status of your account through My Account on VALNet.

VALNet Library Catalog
The Valley Automated Library Network, or VALNet, is a consortium of public and school libraries in the Southeastern Washington and North Central Idaho region that share their resources, information and online catalog. The VALNet library catalog expands your choices by providing materials from other libraries within the consortium, and materials can be returned to any VALNet library.

Reference Assistance

We encourage patrons to seek the assistance of library staff in finding answers and solutions to reference questions. A valid library card is NOT required to receive reference help; however, a valid card is needed to check out items from the library. Staff is prohibited from performing tasks of a personal business nature, such as giving tax advice, conducting business on behalf of the patron, recommending a medical practitioner or attorney, etc.

Telephone, email, and surface mail requests will be answered as staff is available and will be acknowledged within 24 hours. To request help, fill out our online form or call us at 208.798.2525. You can also email us.

Interlibrary Loans (ILL)
Interlibrary Loan service allows libraries to access and borrow items outside of their own library system. If you can't find the item you're looking for in the VALNet library catalog, please contact the library for ILL consideration.

Please keep in mind:

  • ILL is limited solely to books
  • Requested books may take as long as two weeks to arrive
  • Some items may involve an ILL fee
  • Some items borrowed from other libraries may not be renewed
  • ILL from Lewiston City Library is only available to Lewiston city residents

Email Interlibrary Loan or phone the library at 208.798.2525.

Fines and Charges

You are responsible for returning items checked out on your library card by the due date. A fine is charged for each day an item is overdue. The overdue fine is $0.15 per item per day.

You will be blocked from checking out additional materials if you have accumulated 3 or more overdue items and/or $5 or more in fines or charges. Overdue items will also prevent you from ordering or renewing items online.

Fines will be charged to the patron's account for materials that are lost, damaged or returned incomplete.
