Solid Waste Services
Operations
The City of Lewiston manages an integrated solid waste management system consisting of diverse operations including waste collection, waste reuse, recycling and waste disposal. The City’s solid waste management system provides for safe and reliable solid waste services at competitive prices for residential and commercial customers.
Curbside solid waste, yard waste, and recycling collection services are contracted through Sunshine Disposal and Recycling, Inc. ("Sunshine"). Sunshine uses semi-automated and fully-automated vehicles for residential and commercial mobile cart service and semi-automated vehicles for other commercial services.
Mobile Cart Service
Residential and commercial customers eligible for mobile cart service may choose from a 32-gallon, 64-gallon, or 96-gallon cart service.
Pack Out Services
In accordance with City Code Section 17-32, residents who can't bring their solid waste, yard waste, or recycling cart to the curb or alley due to physical constraints may be granted an exemption from doing so upon completing a Pack Out Request Form.
Interested in applying for Pack Out services?
A Pack Out Request Form can be obtained in a couple of ways:
- Submit your request via this online form;
- Request that the form be mailed or emailed to you by contacting our office at 208-746-1316 extension 0 or publicworks@cityoflewiston.org; or
- Pick up a hard copy of the form at our office located at 215 D Street, Lewiston, ID 83501.
Once you've filled out the your request, completed forms can be submitted in a couple of ways:
- Email a completed form to publicworks@cityoflewiston.org;
- Mail a completed form to P.O. Box 617, Lewiston, ID 83501; or
- Deliver a completed form to our office at 215 D Street, Lewiston, ID 83501
Once we receive your completed form, we begin our review and will keep you updated on the process of your request. Please keep in mind that not all requests can be granted.
Sanitation Utility
Adjustments for all utilities (Water, Sewer, Sanitation, and Stormwater Drainage System) service fees are established by resolution of the City Council. The fees, rates, and charges are based on operation and maintenance costs and planned Capital Improvements for each utility. The fees, rates, and charges are collected and deposited into each utility’s corresponding Enterprise Fund.
Rates
The mobile cart service rates are adopted by Lewiston City Council. The rates include solid waste, yard waste collection, and curbside recycling.
- How do I request a trash can or upgrade my trash can size?

You can request a trash can or change your current trash can size by calling the Utility Billing Department at 208-746-3671 extension 0 or by emailing your request to ub@cityoflewiston.org.
- What are acceptable recyclable items?

Acceptable Items
With Single-stream recycling, you no longer need to separate your recyclables. The following are acceptable recyclable items:
- Aluminum cans, foil, and trays. Steel and tin cans. Please rinse all containers. Labels are okay.
- Paper Cartons:
- Catalogs
- Cereal Boxes
- Flattened Cardboard
- Junk Mail
- Magazines
- Newspaper
- Office Paper
- Paper Grocery Bags
- Phonebooks
- Plastic household containers. Please rinse and remove caps. Labels are okay. No containers that contained motor oil or other hazardous waste.
Unacceptable Items
Do not put the following in your recycling cart:
- Batteries
- Electronics
- Fluorescent Bulbs
- Glass
- Hazardous Waste
- Medical Waste
- Plastic Bags
- Styrofoam
- What do I do with all of these leaves?

Lewiston residents are responsible for their own leaf cleanup. Leaves can be self-hauled to Clearwater Composting or added to the residential yard waste curbside pickup.
